Remote work has given businesses incredible flexibility. It has opened up access to talent, reduced commuting, and allowed teams to work from almost anywhere.
But after a while, we noticed something missing.
The small, everyday interactions that happen naturally in an office had quietly disappeared.
There were fewer spontaneous conversations, fewer quick questions across the room, and fewer moments where you simply knew who was available. Instead, everything became a scheduled meeting or another Slack message.
It wasn't slowing us down dramatically, but it was changing the way we worked together.
The challenge
Like many remote teams, we had all the tools we needed to communicate.
Slack handled messaging. Video calls handled meetings. Email handled everything else.
Yet something still felt disconnected.
If you wanted to ask someone a quick question, you had to wonder if they were available. If you wanted to brainstorm an idea, it often meant scheduling time instead of having a natural conversation.
The human side of work was becoming increasingly difficult to recreate.
Looking for a better way
Rather than adding another communication platform, we wanted something that made conversations feel more natural.
That is where Gather came in.
Gather is a virtual office where each team member has an avatar and a workspace. You can see who is online, move around the office, walk over to a colleague, and start a conversation just as you might in a physical workplace.
It sounds surprisingly simple, but that simplicity is exactly what appealed to us.
What changed
Almost immediately, conversations became easier.
Instead of sending a message asking whether someone was free, you could simply see who was around.
Quick questions stayed quick.
Ideas were shared in the moment instead of waiting until the next meeting.
Even social conversations became more common. Those informal chats that help build relationships and strengthen company culture started to return.
For a remote team, those moments matter more than people often realise.
Technology should make work feel easier
There is no single tool that solves every remote work challenge.
For us, Gather solved a very specific problem. It helped recreate the visibility and spontaneity that often disappear when everyone is working from different locations.
It reminded us that productivity is not only about automating tasks or improving workflows.
Sometimes the biggest improvements come from making it easier for people to connect with one another.
Could it help your team?
Every business works differently, so there is no universal solution.
But if your team feels disconnected, if conversations are becoming increasingly formal, or if everything seems to require another scheduled meeting, it might be worth looking beyond traditional messaging platforms.
The right tool is not always the one with the most features.
Sometimes it is simply the one that makes work feel a little more human.
