Air quality is top of the agenda in the world right now and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution poses a significant health risk and is responsible for more deaths annually than smoking. There are several air pollutants (i.e., tiny particles, nitrogen dioxide, ozone etc) which we are exposed in our day to day lives ranging from when we are in indoors (sprays, cooking, new furniture) to when we are outdoors (vehicles, industries, construction etc). These pollutants can lead to health conditions or worsen existing health conditions such as asthma, respiratory, breathing difficulties, COPD, pneumonia, bronchitis etc.

The UK is commited to managing air quality by implementing air quality standards for these pollutants and ensuring that where a development is likely to impact air quality an air quality assessment is submitted to relevant authorities (local authorities, Planning Inspectorate, Environment Agency etc) to carefully consider whether the development would results in significant air quality impact and whether these can be mitigated before these development can be permitted.

As an air quality expert with over 15 years’ experience, I can provide support to the developer, planners or architects who are involved in submitting planning applications that require an air quality assessment. This could be at any stage of the planning process.
